The Fight and Future of Women’s Rights:
The Utilization of Graphic Design as an Instrument for Social Change

This thesis explores the potential of graphic design to address and promote social and political issues, in particular women’s rights issues. The objective of this thesis is to create the atmosphere for a unified wave of women’s rights activists through the effective use of visual communication. In order to achieve this objective several stages of research were conducted. The first stage was to analyze historical events in which changes were made politically, resulting in social and regulatory change that produced a behavioral shift in society. The next stage of research required the identification of current issues that could unify women’s rights activist into action and change. The final stage of research entailed studying the successful methods of reaching wide, diverse audiences and unifying them through visual media.

The purpose of this thesis is not only to motivate women particularly, but also to activate graphic designers to be less detached from causes of great social importance. In order to promote and mobilize this campaign for change I am proposing a web campaign that reaches a wide demographic through user-directed aesthetics. This thesis will contribute to the field of graphic design by demonstrating the power of design methodology and its ability to further a social and political movement.
